Samantha Polansky

St. Luke's University Health Network Community Health Department
Samantha is a Community Fellow with the St. Luke's University Health Network Community Health Department, where she has worked on data collection, analysis, and writing for the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) reports for each of St. Luke's hospital campuses. She integrated primary data from focus group interviews and community surveys, and conducted secondary data analyses in order to create seven cohesive reports outlining the health needs faced by the communities each hospital serves. Samantha is also developing a CHNA implementation guide, designed to streamline the assessment process in the next cycle. Samantha is an M.A. candidate in Sociology.

Kate Cavazza

Renew Lehigh Valley (RenewLV)
Kate is a Community Fellow with Renew Lehigh Valley (RenewLV), an advocacy organization committed to bringing Smart Growth principles to the Lehigh Valley. While diving into all facets of local government and politics, she works on promoting the organization's four initiatives which are farmland preservation, food sustainability, smart transportation, and education and awareness. Over the course of the year she will apply her passion for environmental sustainability toward support management, large-scale event planning, social media expansion, website development, and community organizing. Kate is a M.A. candidate in Political Science.

Kristen Schmidt

Family Connection of Easton, Inc.
Kristen is a Community Fellow in Easton’s Paxinosa Elementary School “Community School” office, working with its lead partner organization, Family Connection of Easton, Inc. Kristen is developing outreach protocols, volunteer information and training manuals, and is designing a volunteer training and contact database. She is also involved in planning and recruiting volunteers for the school's special events, doing everything from creating a wall-of-honor for service members, to leading grade-by-grade assembly meetings for Paxinosa Elementary's seven hundred students. Kristen has continued to foster her undergraduate research interests through the Community School mission at Paxinosa Elementary, and is grateful for the experiences she will take with her into further graduate pursuits. She is an M.A. candidate in Sociology.

Catherine McClellan

Bethlehem Area School District and the Bethlehem Area Education Foundation
Catherine is a Community Fellow with the Bethlehem Area School District and the Bethlehem Area Education Foundation. She assists the district in their social media outreach, public relations, and media coverage of events throughout the school year. Catherine also serves as project manager for key fundraising events aimed toward raising money to support innovative educational projects within the Bethlehem Area School District. Additionally, she is writing a series of columns on district initiatives for local publications, and working on improving district communication and transparency with the greater Bethlehem community. Catherine is an M.A. Candidate in Political Science.

Erika Ashman

Safe Harbor Easton
Erika is a Community Fellow with Safe Harbor Easton, a transitional homeless center which provides case management, employment services, and recovery resources for residents. Erika is developing a community garden program at the shelter which may facilitate self-sufficiency for the residents, who will not only build and work in the garden, but may also develop a variety of skills and experience through the distribution of plants, flowers, and vegetables within the local community. As she awaits the spring, Erika has been researching grant opportunities and the therapeutic benefits of gardening, and has developed partnerships with Easton’s West Ward Neighborhood Partnership, Lehigh Gap Nature Center, and Penn State Master Gardeners. Erika also works on volunteer recruitment, interviews residents for the Safe Harbor Facebook, and seeks out diverse grant opportunities for the shelter. Erika is a M.A. candidate in Sociology.
